Welcome to the new school year!
If your child is ill, please remember to call the school in the early AM, and report symptoms. We are again tracking attendance in regard to children with flu-like illness. We are especially interested if your child has a fever and a sore throat or cough.
When to keep your child home-
Children should be fever-free, without the use of fever reducing medicines such as Tylenol or Advil, for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Children with vomiting and/or diarrhea should stay home for 24 hours after the last occurrence. If you have any question about sending your child to school please give me a call.
Staying healthy during cold and flu season:
- Frequent hand washing with soap and water is the #1 defense against illness. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Cough/sneeze into a tissue, your sleeve or elbow.
- Don’t share cups or silverware.
- Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.
- Drink lots of water.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Children 6-11 years old require at least 10-11 hours of sleep each night.
- Add some activity to your day. A 10 minute walk a few times a day will improve your health.
- Check with your health care provider about getting the flu vaccine.
Medication at School:
If your child requires a prescription medication at school, the nurse needs a signed doctor’s order, written parental permission and the medication must be in the original container. The medication also needs to be brought to school by an adult.
If your child needs over-the-counter medication such as cough drops, pain relievers or cold medication they need to be brought to school by an adult, in the original container with a note stating the reason it needs to be given and the time that it should be administered. Forms are located in the back of the student handbook or may be obtained in the nurse’s office.
